Why Restaurants Add a Service Charge for Large Groups:

1. To ensure fair tipping – Large parties often take up more time and effort, staff and extra needs that require a lot of attention. Inconsistent tipping can make that work unrewarded to our added staff and the restaurant.

2. To protect staff income – Especially in regions where tipping is a major part of server wages.

3. To simplify billing – Adding a fixed service charge avoids awkwardness around calculating tips for big bills

4. Tipping is optional - If no tip is given, the service charge will be distributed to the staff to ensure fair income.
